TERESA DE FREITAS
I was born in South Africa to Portuguese parents and lived there most of my life but since 2017 I’ve been living in the UK. I was always interested in Maria Montessori’s philosophy and method of teaching and as such, the first eight years of my career in education was spent in a prestigious Montessori school where I had the privilege to work side by side my mentor, Winfred Pledger. It was there, using Montessori methods, I developed a style of teaching chess to children as young as two. This included limiting speech when teaching young children, so as not to interfere with independent thought and concentration; the child teaches themselves with minimal adult support and the child feels confident and excited to continue to play! This method of teaching has been the inspiration behind developing a series of children’s books which I hope your child will enjoy and learn from.
